It is set in a world where elves, humans, and high-fantasy creatures all exist in the same world. The game is largely similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, with the exception of many different characters one of which is Sigmund the Redeemer, an important part of the story. The story follows the journey of a young man named Gabriel as he joins the Forgotten Army, a group of fighters who were once called by their king, to fight against the Lich King and his undead army.

The thing that bugged me and I haven't come up with a reasonable explanation no matter what was that at some points Eragon received better weapons and even armors for himself and Saphira. The thing is that except for the nice look of it, there was no change in the fights probably just to keep up with the story. The only skill increase that can be noticed is the "Fury" ability.

As the hero and his companion finish off enemy after enemy, they gain power orbs that allow the use of fury they gradually consume the power increasing their attack speed and power. The combo system is dead simple, with moves made up of three button combinations resulting in beat-downs that most of the time look very much the same.

There's also a bow you can whip out for ranged kills and grab manoeuvres with a bit of bullet-time thrown in for good measure. You play a fabled 'dragon rider', which means you can call upon a fire-breathing beastie for some pre-scripted carnage when you're in a tight spot, as well as flap about on the back of one in some Panzer Dragoon-style stages.
