It's currently streaming free on Tubi, as is the unrelated but still decent sequel. So in closing yeah it is a bit of a poorly-grafted patchwork mess that could've been done a lot better, and the acting is mostly awkward and lifeless, yes!
But I've still seen a lot worse, it ain't unbearable, I think it's interesting and effective enough as an anthology to at least warrant a viewing, and overall I find it a good watch.
I guess I'd recommend it to the more hardcore of horror anthology fans who are willing to forgive a lot in the name of being creeped-out and it its credit, once or twice I for one was! Have a good one, and be very careful what you watch? This is an original twist on the "Halloween" theme although no one could accuse the film makers of trespassing on the franchise. A babysitter is left to mind a feisty brother and sister.
While out trick or treating, someone has slipped a video into the boy's bag; this turns out to be a rather unusual video nasty. Naturally the two are intent on playing it, but the babysitter has other ideas although she does let them watch part of it before deciding it it unsuitable and packing them off to bed. Just as naturally she decides to watch the rest of the film, the villain of which is a killer clown who just might be more frightening than John Gacy.
On screen the clown is wreaking havoc on the usual damsels and any man who gets in his way. He appears too to have supernatural powers as one of his targets manages to kill him, but he bounces right back following her in a car.
The babysitter is more than a little unnerved, especially as towards the end the clown emerges from the TV set with bad intentions. The obvious question is how much of this is in her head? Thankfully this film is rather on the short side, but don't watch it if you are of a sensitive disposition. TdSmth5 26 September Some kid finds a VHS tape in his candy bag on Halloween.
The babysitter agrees to play it while the boy and his sister watch. On tape we see a creepy clown who drugs a girl in a train station. Next the girl wakes up chained among with the 2 other girls. The other two know that every once in a while someone will yank the chain and that girl then vanishes. Well, under the leadership of our girl, the 3 decide to find an escape but they end up grabbed. Our girl gets to witness some black mass where a fetus is cut out of a woman and the devil has sex with a girl.
That's a bit too much for the babysitter and she sends the kids to sleep. Still she's curious and keeps watching the tape.
This time a girl is home alone, when she's visited by an alien. She tries to fight back but the alien wins. The final story is about a girl driving around somewhere. She stops at a gas station where she and the attendant have a run-in with the clown. Things don't end well for the attendant. The girl escapes in her car but the clown keeps after her and eventually catches her. Things don't end well for her either.
Finally, the clown manages to escape from inside the TV and makes it into the living room and he goes after the babysitter and the kids. I never understood the appeal of clown whether in circus or in horror movies. But this clown at least is seriously creepy unlike the idiotic looking clown in the dismal It remake. The problem with this and many horror movies that follow this format is that once we switch the the VHS tape stories the image quality becomes distractingly awful.
And it's not even necessary. That said, the horror stories themselves are good, violent, original but empty. It could have been worse had they used found-footage format. The idea is actually pretty good as it gives the director a vehicle to present his short films. So overall this movie worked for me.
It is clearly a low-budget film with a somewhat sinister and absurd atmosphere, mixed with some gore scenes and an atmosphere that reminded me of 80s horror movies. That is the strongest and most positive point why I could actually appreciate this movie.
That nostalgic feeling and mood in this "Haloween"-like film. It seemed indeed a rented VHS with a dated movie. Complete with a bad image caused by age and noise on the videotape. You only needed the monotonous music of an old synthesizer and it is complete.
It all starts on a Haloween night. Sarah Katie Maguire has to babysit that night and the two teenagers, Timmy and Tia, are back from a round of "Trick or Treat". Just before they go to sleep, Timmy discovers a VHS tape between his candy. They convince Sarah to look what's actually on it , assuming that it is probably a scary Haloween movie.
Eventually there appear to be three short horror films with "Art the Clown" as a central figure. The different stories are actually the downside of this movie. They are not very original and the first two are downright bad.
The first story is pretty absurd and confusing. Besides a claustrophobic feeling and the intention to make a kind of demonic torture story out of it, it didn't make a big resounding impression on me. A content-free and completely insignificant whole. The exhibit of gross pictures didn't make it any better. And then it seemed as if they cut and chopped some marzipan.
Not exactly a successful part of the movie. The clown came here briefly in the picture, but more as a prop and also the cause. So this was just a warming up. The second story took a completely different turn, but it was completely ruined by the design of the creature.
It looked like the figure portrayed in "The Scream", but with all kinds of attributes. Total nonsense, no suspense or fear moments. The third story was the highlight. A gross and extravagant final story with Art as a conductor in a bloody tragedy. A collage of bloodstained knives, a hacksaw with remnants of human flesh, and a still life of the girl fully carved with obscene words.
Clearly the better story of the trilogy Ultimately the story then progresses as expected. The whole movie revolves around Art and I must admit that this is a truly deranged clown with a bloodthirsty, spooky and creepy look. A successful representation of a humorous nightmare, innocent but deadly at the same time.
A devil in a box that always plays on his horn, and who makes a transition from the imaginary world to reality. A real collection of curiosities with many incomprehensible creatures, interspersed with some ghoulish images and gory moments. The other characters were not exactly bad. Most looked really just frightened out of their eyes throughout the whole film.
Katie Maguire played a persuasive role in which she has to put the two teenagers at ease and overcome her own fears at the same time. Many will think this is a very bad movie. Others will judge it as a sublime work. I'm right there in the middle. With the first two stories better developed, this wouldn't have been a clownish display. Make sure you watch this movie completely, because the sting is in the tail. I've always had a weakness for anthology horror films, so this one, about a babysitter watching a mysterious VHS tape secretly given to her charges, intrigued me, but the end results are only a mixed bag.
Built up from several short films made by this film's makers, this comes off as a patchwork, vaguely reminding me of the trainwreck, Night Train To Terror, only not as howlingly awful. Vignettes are about a demonic clown kidnapping women, a silly looking alien invading a woman's home, and another story of the same clown terrorising another young girl on the highway late at night, with a twist which doesn't seem plausible, so much as it seems like the filmmakers desperately just wanted a pointless surprise twist ending.
The compilation film works better when it focuses on mood and atmosphere, because it is good looking and well filmed for the most part and it makes good use of colours, in a lot of scenes, but it goes way overboard trying to make the short films presented on the VHS look like old film footage, with artificial scratches, and static on the soundtrack.
No VHS tape ever had things like that. Nor did a VHS tape ever have such ridiculous colour saturation, as is show here. The torture effects drown out what atmosphere is built in the other scenes. The twist ending is well done, if predictable. Fernando-Rodrigues 1 March There are some weak actings, and as in every anthology, some segments are not so good The ET and The Gas Station , but overall, this movie is a slash on the horror genre.
